ROLL-OFF DUMPSTER FOR RENT: SIX QUESTIONS TO ASK A SUPPLIER

Find a redbox+ Dumpsters Location Near You.

Roll-off dumpsters are a great way to deal with large amounts of trash from demolitions, yard work, and big projects – whether residential or commercial. The best part? You fill the dumpster, and the provider just picks it up when it’s full. You don’t need to worry about disposing of the waste after the project is done.

Need to rent a roll-off dumpster for your home or commercial project? No sweat. We’ve broken out the top questions you should ask when renting a roll-off dumpster.

HOW MUCH DOES A ROLL-OFF DUMPSTER COST?

This question is actually two-fold. The price of the dumpster you rent will depend on the size you need. Providers can have dumpster sizes ranging between 10 to 40 yards. The type of project you’re planning will dictate the right size of the dumpster. For example, a 10-yard dumpster is suitable for minor renovations and small-scale landscaping projects, but a larger, 30-yard dumpster is more likely to be needed for a commercial project.

IS THERE A WEIGHT LIMIT?

This is an important question to ask your provider because if you go over the weight limit, you’ll likely need to pay a fee. Weight limits can vary depending on the dumpster service, and it’s determined by the size of the roll-off, and the type of truck that picks up the dumpster when it’s full. Keep in mind that the dumpster itself will also weigh quite a bit before it’s even filled. However, the weight of the dumpster itself should not be included in the overall weight limit.

Debris can also vary in weight. When you get quotes from suppliers, be sure to inform them of the type of project you’re doing so they can help you determine the right size of dumpster. If you’re working with heavier debris, a bigger dumpster can accommodate more weight.

WHAT CAN YOU DISCARD IN THE DUMPSTER?

Surprisingly, there are a number of materials you cannot discard in a dumpster. Most dumpster providers will not allow you to throw any type of paint or lacquer into the dumpster. You should also never throw away batteries, asbestos, or flammable materials like petroleum and gasoline. Most dumpster companies also prohibit throwing motor oils and tires into the roll-off dumpster. Tires are required to be recycled and cannot be thrown into a landfill, while motor oils and other substances may be considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of in different ways, depending on where you live.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP THE DUMPSTER?

You’ll want to be very clear with your supplier about the length of time you’ll need the dumpster. Be sure the dumpster company understands the planned timeline for your project so they can give you a true quote. The length of time you can keep your dumpster will vary on the provider.

WHERE CAN THE DUMPSTER BE PLACED?

For residential projects, the ideal spot to keep your dumpster would be in your driveway. Given the weight of the dumpster, it wouldn’t be recommended to place it in your yard, because it could cause damage to the sod. It’s important to place plywood under the dumpster so it doesn’t damage your driveway or the street. At redbox+ Dumpsters, we bring our own pavement protectors, but not all suppliers do. Ask your supplier if you should provide the plywood or if they have it covered.

If you don’t have room on your property for your roll-off dumpster, then you can place it on public property, but you’ll need to clear this with your community or town first.

DO I NEED A PERMIT TO RENT A ROLL-OFF DUMPSTER?

If you need to put your dumpster on shared property, you will most likely need a permit from your city or town. Even if you choose to place your dumpster in your driveway, it’s best practice to confirm with the town whether or not that requires a dumpster permit.

Permits do cost a nominal fee and can be renewed in most towns. A quick search on your town’s website will tell you if you need a permit and how to apply for one.
