DUMPSTER PERMIT: WHEN DO YOU NEED ONE AND HOW DO YOU APPLY?

Find a redbox+ Dumpsters Location Near You.

You’ve got a big renovation project planned at home, and you’re excited to get to work. However, there’s one last thing you need to figure out: the dumpster. You know you need one, and you may even have a few reputable waste management companies in mind — but do you need a permit? How do you go about getting one? Fortunately, we’ve pulled together some general rules around dumpster permitting to help you out.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A DUMPSTER PERMIT?

Generally speaking, if you plan to rent a dumpster and the entire container fits in your driveway or on your property, most towns won’t require you to apply for a permit. However, you may need a permit if you don’t have the space on your property to fit the unit and need to place it at least partially on the street or sidewalk. Due to the dumpster being placed on public property, you’ll need to get in touch with your town’s public works department to obtain a street permit or right-of-way permit.  If you’ve hired a contractor, check with them as they often pull the permits.

Rules and regulations can vary from town to town, so make sure to do some preliminary research on your city’s website to determine if you’ll need a permit — regardless of where you place your dumpster. If you’re still unable to find your answer, a quick call to the city clerk can help clear up any uncertainty.

HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR A DUMPSTER PERMIT?

Many city websites have a form you can fill out to apply for a permit. If you’re unable to find it, you may need to call the city clerk to locate the application. If you do fill out the application online, some city websites require you to create an account in order to apply.

Once you’ve reached the application page, you’ll want to have the following information ready:

  • Name of the dumpster rental company and their contact phone number
  • Name of the property owner, applicant’s name (if not the same), property address, and phone number
  • The dates of your dumpster rental time frame
  • Exact details of where the dumpster will be placed
  • Expect to pay a nominal fee for your permit. The exact amount will vary by town. Some cities will also charge a renewal fee if you need to keep your dumpster longer than initially anticipated.
