Estimating the Right Roofing Dumpster Size
Roofing materials are not only bulky but also surprisingly heavy, making waste disposal a key consideration during any roofing project. Opting for a smaller dumpster with multiple scheduled pickups is often a more practical and cost-effective solution than dealing with an overloaded, oversized container. For most homes, a 20-yard dumpster is typically sufficient, but the ideal size will depend on your roof’s square footage and the weight of your existing shingles. Need guidance? Our team is here to help you choose the perfect dumpster size to make your roofing project as efficient as possible!
Measuring your roof
100 square feet of shingles = 1 roofing square
In roofing, the standard unit of measurement is a “roofing square.” You’ll want to measure your roof in square feet first, and then convert that into roofing squares. Also, check how many layers of shingles are currently on your roof. If the roof has more than one layer of shingles that needs to be removed, multiply the original number of roofing squares by the number of layers.
Consider the weight of materials
Some types of shingles are heavier than others, and different sizes of roll-off dumpsters have different weight limits. For example:
- 3-tab shingles are your standard asphalt shingle – they generally weigh about 250 pounds per roofing square.
- Architectural shingles, on the other hand, are larger – they weigh closer to 400 pounds per roofing square.
A 20-yard dumpster typically holds between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds, which is roughly equivalent to 2,500 to 3,000 square feet of standard single-layer shingles. If your estimate for roofing material weight and volume is nearing the dumpster’s limit, it’s wise to opt for a larger size. Keep in mind, shingles aren’t the only waste you’ll be disposing of during the project.
