Roofing Dumpster Rental Considerations
When choosing a roofing dumpster, there are three main factors to consider: the materials being disposed of, the size of the roof, and the weight of the debris.
Materials
The most common roofing materials are asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and slate roofing. Asphalt shingles are the lightest and least expensive, while metal roofing is the heaviest and most expensive. Slate roofing is in between.
Roof Size
The size of the roof will determine the size of the dumpster you need. A small roof may only need a 10-yard dumpster, while a large roof may need a 40-yard dumpster.
Weight of the Debris
The weight of the debris will also affect the size of the dumpster you need. Asphalt shingles are relatively lightweight, while metal roofing is much heavier.

Estimating the Right Roofing Dumpster Size
Roofing waste is heavy, so it is often better to rent a smaller dumpster and have it emptied multiple times than to rent a larger dumpster that will get too heavy before it is even full. The average residential roofing project uses a 20-yard roll-off dumpster, but the best size for your project will depend on the total area of your roof and the weight of the current roofing materials.
Measuring your roof
The standard unit of measurement for roofs is the roofing square, which is equal to 100 square feet of shingles. To determine the roofing squares in your roof, measure the total square footage of your roof and divide by 100. If your roof has multiple layers of shingles, multiply the total roofing squares by the number of layers.
Consider the weight of the materials
The weight of the roofing materials will also affect the size of the dumpster you need. Shingles come in a variety of weights, so it is important to know the weight of the shingles on your roof. For example, 3-tab shingles typically weigh 250 pounds per roofing square, while architectural shingles weigh closer to 400 pounds per roofing square.
Choosing the right dumpster size
Once you know the total roofing squares and the weight of the roofing materials, you can choose the right dumpster size. A 20-yard dumpster has an average weight limit of 4,000-6,000 pounds, which works out to about 2,500-3,000 square feet of single layer standard shingles. If you are close to a dumpster’s capacity when estimating the weight and amount of your roofing materials, we recommend going up a size since you’ll have additional waste aside from the shingles.
