Understanding Dumpster Permits

If you’re eager to start your home renovation project, you may need to take a step back and think about all the necessary paperwork you might need to do. For example, you may need to secure a permit to even have a dumpster at your location. That can be frustrating, but don’t worry, we’ve provided some general guidelines to assist you in obtaining the necessary permit for a dumpster.

Is a dumpster permit actually needed?

In most cases, you won’t need to get a permit to rent a dumpster if it can fit on your property or in your driveway. However, if you don’t have enough space on your property and need to place the dumpster at least partially on the street or sidewalk, you may need to take a trip down to your city’s public work’s department to secure a permit. This might be a street permit or a right-of-way permit. If you’ve hired a contractor, they may be able to help you get that permit a little quicker and easier.

It’s important to note that the rules and regulations regarding dumpster permitting can vary from one town to another. To find out if you need a permit, you should go check out your city’s website or give the city clerk a quick call. This will help you understand the requirements in your specific location.

How do I apply for a dumpster permit?

Often times, you can just find and fill out a form on your city’s website. If you’re unable to find it, go ahead and call the city clerk to locate the application. If you do fill out the application online, some city websites require you to create an account in order to apply.

Once you’ve reached the application page, you’ll want to have the following information ready:

  • Name of the dumpster rental company and their contact phone number
  • Name of the property owner, applicant’s name (if not the same), property address, and phone number
  • The dates of your dumpster rental time frame
  • Exact details of where the dumpster will be placed
  • Expect to pay a nominal fee for your permit. The exact amount will vary by town. Some cities will also charge a renewal fee if you need to keep your dumpster longer than initially anticipated.
